The Cage

Start

The Cage

The Cage is a Social Justice activity being held at Saint Ignatius College this week. During the day on Thursday, overnight on Thursday night and on Friday morning approximately 30 students and 4 staff members will spend the time inside a “cage” to show support for, and raise awareness about, the plight of refugees.

The Cage is a temporary fence structure erected near the school canteen and the participants will be inside it for the duration of the activity, including sleeping in The Cage overnight. Throughout the day on Thursday classes will visit The Cage to support the participants and learn more about the refugee crisis.

This activity has been organised by Alex Henry (Social Justice Captain) and Ms Alicia Deak (Social Justice Co-ordinator and Ignatian Co-ordinator).

Several of the students and staff participating in the Cage activity are also involved in another social justice activity in the College this week – the Refugee Ration Pack Challenge for Jesuit Refugee Services. This has been organsied by Milly Stannard (Yr 10 Student Leader) and Ms Alicia Deak. Consequently the participants in the Cage will eat the JRS Ration Pack (rice) for lunch and dinner.

In the evening the participants will watch a documentary on refugees escaping from Syria and travelling to Greece. Each student involved has created an A4 poster that will be displayed on The Cage with facts about the refugee crisis in the Middle East, Australia and Europe; or Australian Government policies; or the process of coming to Australia; or the survival rate; or travelling by boat.

The Cage activity finishes with a shared breakfast on Friday morning and as Friday is a student-free day (for staff to write reports) everyone who has been in The Cage will be able to go home on Friday morning for a well-earned rest after spending the night in The Cage.
