Our Reflection and Remembrance Garden

Posted 25-Aug-2017

Towards the end of last year Saint Ignatius College held an official Opening and Blessing of their new Reflection and Remembrance Garden.

The ceremony was held on All Souls’ Day November 2nd which was especially chosen for the opening and blessing as it is the day that commemorates the faithful departed and in particular, but not exclusively, one's relatives.

The garden is a sacred space in the school, a place for personal, quiet reflection and a place where everyone (students and staff) are welcome to spend time and remember the people who were part of their life and have now passed away. The garden will include the memory of a student or staff member who dies while attending/working at the school.

At the Opening and Blessing ceremony of the garden on All Souls’ Day plaques were unveiled to mark the memory of four students who have passed away in the 10 years of Saint Ignatius College’s history.

The Blessing was conducted by:
Fr Gerry Healy SJ, a Board member at the school and currently based at Melbourne University and Newman College and
Fr Michael Richardson, a Canonical Administrator of the school and Parish Priest at Holy Trinity Queenscliffe.

The Opening was conducted by Deputy Principal Paul Lewis. A lovely gathering of family members, classmates and friends of the four deceased students attended the ceremony.

Blessing and Dedication prayers
Friends let us dedicate this Reflection and Remembrance Garden and rejoice in its use.
We ask for blessing upon this garden and grant that it may be a place of peace and refuge for those who seek solace and comfort.
We dedicate this garden and may it offer us the peace and comfort in all times and all troubles
We dedicate this garden in the hope that its beauty comforts us and offers us peace.
May this special space be welcoming to those who find their way here.
May the garden be a place where the gift of laughter will rise above our troubles, where treasured stories will be shared to make us wiser and where the pain of loss will be embraced with hope and trust.
May this special garden help us, as those who have gone before us, helped us.

One of the students whose plaque is in the garden would have been in Year 12 last year (he died in Year 8) and so the College organised an additional and very special service with the Year 12 student group of 2016 before they finished up for the year and this provided a lovely opportunity for the students to remember their friend and classmate.

Saint Ignatius College is very grateful to the families of the four deceased students as they have generously embraced the concept of the Reflection and Remembrance Garden and each family worked with the school over a period of several months to develop the design of a special and unique plaque for the garden in the memory of their daughter/son.

The College is very grateful for several donations received from families of the deceased students, other families in the school and the Saint Ignatius Parents and Friends' Association.

A great deal of work has gone into the creation of this sacred garden space and the school acknowledges the work done by the landscaper, Will Searle, and the College
Grounds Staff.

In the weeks following the opening and blessing RE teachers conducted a prayer service with their classes in the garden so all students had the chance to visit and understand the importance of the development of this beautiful new sacred, reflective space in the school grounds.

Deputy Principal – Staff, Identity and Operations
