Our New College Captains

Posted 14-Nov-2017

On Friday 10th November the College held its '2018 Leaders Investiture' Assembly.

Our two new College Captains for 2018, Kerry Kingsbury and Dean O'Brien made their maiden speeches to the College community.

Special guest at the Assembly, Nathan Currie (College Captain Class of 2009) presented the College Captains with their badges as well as welcoming the in-coming 2018 student leadership group.

Here is a transcript of the College Captain's speeches from the investiture:

Dean O'Brien spoke first.

"Good morning to all staff, students and a warm welcome to all special guests.

Firstly, I would like to personally like to thank the many people who have supported me thus far into this experience that is student leadership and life in general at this college.

As a leader of this college, I would like to show a main emphasis on being approachable to all year levels. I hope this especially over my close friends and year 12 cohort whom I have a great connection with. I also want to be authentic. I don’t want to be remembered as the College Captain who pretends to care and be a hard worker.

My aim is to become regarded as constructive and intuitive, whilst responsible for my every action. That is my main personal pledge to everyone here today.

My primary focus however isn’t upon Kerry or I and about on what we can do. Our attention is fully turned to what WE can do. Each and every student and staff member as well as parents and friends of the college have the power to contribute to the ‘engine’ that is our college environment. I can relate to not wanting to be involved, being too lazy or not caring about giving back, as for some time I did not position the importance of this very factor highly.

I think that the easiest way for anyone to break out of a negative mindset is to completely forget about the negative barriers which impact your involvement. Personally these barriers link to insecurity and the desire to look ‘cool’ among my friends. The insecurities I held for a long time prevented me from getting involved in many things that I am passionate about. An example that immediately comes to mine is not participating in any of the college productions, which to this date is my number one regret.

Trying to be cool and impress my friends was also a trait which led me to not always setting the best impression with teachers and even the people I aimed to impress. It took me some time to realise that there was much more that I could get out of myself as a person and that I could have a positive impact on other people. I believe and am openly proud to be able to push past these barriers and be able to create positive energy as a result, leading me to do good things.

In 2018, Kerry and I are aiming to increase the amount of activity and student led initiatives around the College. The SRC have taken big steps this year to becoming more productive and fulfil bringing ideas to life around the college. I implore all students that this cannot be achieved without a substantial effort from all of us, and that finding ways to give back or get involved whilst matching your interests should be a goal that we all strive to achieve in 2018 and beyond.

The one thing that I value above most of the things I do, say and am known for is that is truly aim to maintain and build friendships. One of my goals is to simply get out of my comfort zone and make many new friends, and relate to people around the college. In saying that, I would love to welcome anyone at anytime to come and say g’day and allow me to learn a little bit about you.

In conclusion… I hope that my actions and decisions can greatly influence others to become active and continue to embrace all aspects of school life. I am honoured and very thankful for the opportunity to represent this College in 2018."

Kerry Kingsbury continued:

"Good morning and welcome to all staff, students and special guests. My name is Kerry, and I am very excited to be working alongside Dean as your College Captains for 2018.

I am so grateful for this position at our school, and I am looking forward to great year getting to know you all. St Ignatius has done so much for me over the past five years, and I feel honoured that I have been appointed College Captain. This is a position I have been able to achieve thanks to the support and guidance from many teachers and students at our great school.

Experiences such as being part of the Triumph Committee, travelling to East Timor, being part of the SRC and Senior Ignatian Leader introduced me to many of you who have inspired me to get out of my comfort zone and just go for the opportunities that widen my perspective.

The SRC and Senior Ignatian leader taught me the Ignatian values of listening before acting, Tri-umph taught me about working with other students with different ideas to achieve the same goal. And Timor taught me the importance of my neighbours, and the connectedness of our world.

I will bring each of these values into next year as school captain as I continue to learn to develop my skills.

I wanted to tell you this because one of the most important keys at our school is that everyone is a leader. That’s what has been taught to us since year seven until our final year of school. We are taught that we need to listen and reflect on what others say before we take action. Leadership is such an important asset to each individual, because it teaches us how to work with others and prompt a change we want to see.

Next year I am hoping to see even more students involving themselves in activities like football or choir or the SRC, because putting your hand up even when it might not be quite your thing is the start of being a good leader and you will always gain more than you lose. Thank you for listening and I am looking forward to an amazing year next year."
