Information Learning Centre (ILC)

The Information Learning Centre (ILC) is an important part of Saint Ignatius College. The Information Learning Centre is a busy and versatile space supporting the teaching and learning of staff and students of the College.

How does the ILC help students with research and reading?

  • We teach a variety of research relevant skills which ensure that students maximise their research time and use relevant resources.
  • We select and locate resources to support topics being studied. This includes sourcing places outside the school ILC (eg. Public Libraries, the National and State Libraries, demonstrations, etc)
  • We have developed an ILC Homepage on the school Intranet, to further support students’ research and literature skills. This can also be accessed from home via the Saint Ignatius website. Students are able to make use of these resources beyond the walls and times of the ILC
  • We provide support material in the form of handouts and video tutorials which are also available via the ILC Homepage
  • We encourage students to explore different authors and genres during our Wide Reading sessions and our Fiction Collection supports this with a diversity of novels.
  • We offer a variety of reading formats for recreational reading, in order to satisfy mixed reading abilities – eg. Novels, graphic novels, illustrated books, magazines and audio books.
  • We have many displays featuring new books and other selected books to show case areas of our collection, so that students and staff become aware of what is available.

What resources are available?

The ILC holds a very comprehensive collection that is regularly maintained, updated and added to. These resources include:

  • Fiction & Non-fiction,
  • Graphic Novels & Illustrated Books
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • DVDs & Audio Books
  • ILC Homepage
  • Online Database
  • e-books

The ILC is a flexible learning space and is utilised in a number of ways:

  • By class groups for research and wider reading which are supported by professional library staff;
  • Supporting staff and students by providing a continually updated ILC homepage
  • Undertaking instructional classes for students on accessing reliable and relevant online information for research projects
  • Working in partnership with English staff to implement the Wider Reading Online Project
  • By students for study and discussion
  • By staff for meetings
  • By year levels for assemblies
  • Hosting special events such as authors
  • Displays of students’ works
  • Displays of special events and student related material
  • A space for private reading of magazines, novels, etc

The ILC is open:
Monday - Friday 8am – 4.30pm
30 minutes of lunchtime

During lunchtime students are welcome to visit the ILC to study, read or to engage in activities such as chess, card games or board games.
