Saint Ignatius College Geelong
Dear Saint Ignatius College community members,
Mosaic Evening 6:00 pm, Thursday, 16th November 2023, at Costa Hall, Deakin Waterfront Campus, Geelong
Our annual ‘Mosaic’ evening is a wonderful yearly College community celebration. All members of our school community are encouraged to attend this wonderful evening on Thursday, 16th November, at Costa Hall, Deakin Waterfront Campus, Geelong. The Student Art & Technology display commences at 6.00 pm in the Costa Hall foyer, followed by the celebration evening that begins at 7.00 pm in the main auditorium. The evening will conclude at about 9 pm. Parents are asked to arrange transport to and from Costa Hall for their daughter or son.
We have received very positive feedback over the years about this major College function. Mosaic reinforces the College’s values for our students, celebrates student achievement in various areas and builds a sense of belonging and school community. I also encourage parents and families to support our community by attending and being part of a delightful and uplifting celebration of the 2023 school year at Saint Ignatius College.
I look forward to joining with the College's students, families and friends to celebrate the school year. As was the case in previous years, no tickets are required to attend; all you will need to do is turn up at Costa Hall, and you will be ushered to a seat. Again, there is no cost to attend, and you are most welcome to invite Grandparents, other family members, and family friends.
Yr 12 exams and pathways
Our Yr 12 VCE students have completed their exam period with the final exams held yesterday. And our Yr 12 VCE Vocational Major (previously VCAL) students have finished their classes for the year. I know some have already obtained an apprenticeship, and others are enrolling in a vocational course for next year. As a College community, we extend our best wishes and pray for our Yr 12 students as they make this very significant transition from secondary school.
I look forward to celebrating with the Yr 12 students, their families and staff at the Valedictory Dinner at GMHBA Stadium, Kardinia Park, on the evening of Friday, 24 November 2023.
Mr Bruce Connor, our Work and Further Education Coordinator, supported many VCAL and VCE students and parents when considering possible pathways. Mr Connor remains available for the rest of the school year (and into the next school year) if any student or parent would like some support or information regarding pathways, courses or employment. He can be contacted by phoning our Office (03 5251 1136) or emailing (connorb@ignatius.vic.edu.au)
2024 Student Leaders Investiture Assembly
The entire school community gathered on Thursday, November 9th in the College MPC to celebrate the newly elected 2024 student leaders. The event was graced by the presence of Fr Gerry Healy SJ, Fr Darien Sticklen, many parents, and two Alma nuns from Timor Leste.
During the assembly, I gave a speech followed by the inaugural speeches of the 2024 College Captains. Some students also entertained the audience with their musical performances. Mr Anthony Gravener, the Student Leader Development Coordinator, gave a reflection before everyone enjoyed the harmonious sounds of the Tetum language sung by the Alma nuns.
Congratulations to all students appointed to leadership positions for next year.
Saint Ignatius. Inspiring me to be a leader.
Loyola Market Day
On Tuesday 14th November, the Years 7 and 8 students organised the annual Loyola Market Day after weeks of planning. The students worked with their Mentor Group to decide what type of stall to put up. There were a variety of stalls, ranging from cakes, lollies, games, raffles, to a dunking machine. The event's main aim was to have fun while raising money for Jesuit Social Services. Overall, it was a successful day of collaboration and enjoyment.
Best wishes for the next fortnight,
Michael Exton | Principal
On Thursday November 9th, I had the privilege of attending a reception for the Nation Youth Science Forum (NYSF) candidates for 2024 which was held at Governor House in Melbourne. NYSF is a forum running for 8 days in either Canberra or Brisbane for incoming Year 12 students to encourage the continued pursuit of STEM in youth. The reception was hosted to allow us to meet and begin to form connections with fellow participants. The reception was also an opportunity to introduce past candidates and their NYSF experiences and how it was instrumental in shaping their professional pathways as leaders in STEM. This was a remarkable opportunity as it was the first event hosted in Melbourne where NYSF participants like myself could finally meet other like-minded people with a passion for STEM. During this event, we were fortunate enough to meet the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, who gave us a very inspiring speech about future young leaders in STEM. The Minister for Youth, and a NYSF representative also addressed the reception reinforcing the message of the importance of STEM in shaping the future across all areas of science. The events hosted in preparation for NYSF in 2024 have been amazing and have helped not only to establish valuable connections for the 2024 event in Canberra but has also sparked curiosity of what the future may bring. I am very excited for what NYSF bring next in January.

Saint Ignatius College Christmas Hamper Appeal 2023.
Once again SICG is launching the annual Christmas hamper appeal in a few weeks time!
This year, we need your help more than ever to continue to create abundant and wholesome hampers that are given out to those who need it most in our region.
Christmas is a season of giving and love so whilst it might seem annoying or insignificant to bring in a small donation, your contribution could mean that someone is able to receive a special treat or present.
The Christmas Hamper Appeal will occur Week 8 between Monday 20th- Friday 24th of November. There will be two soft drink sales on Friday 3rd November and Friday 17th November. The money raised will go directly to gift cards for the hampers.
Collection points will be placed in each homeroom/mentor group and it would be terrific if everyone could bring in what their homeroom/house has been allocated! Specific requests for items will go out to Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 and each Senior House.
In past years, our college community has really united together and achieved fantastic results - which we are incredibly grateful for, so let’s continue to band together and live out the Ignatian ethos, to love and to serve.
