First Nations Artwork

First Nations Artwork

Over the last 6 months, Year 11 VCE VM students have been completing a number of tasks and activities, learning, exploring and researching Australian First Nations histories, traditions, customs, language, lore and artwork to better understand the world’s oldest continuous culture.

Students have attended the following excursions this year to support their studies:

  • Saplings performance: Geelong Arts Centre
  • Saplings is a new Australian play discussing youth incarceration and the cycle of habitual offending
  • Booln Booln Cultural Centre
  • Students spent the day weaving traditional Dilli bags, learning about Wadawurrung people, language and creation stories
  • The Basin visits
  • Students researched The Basin just up the road from our school next to Bellarine Secondary College. The Basin has a long and rich connection with local First Nations people as they’ve used this area for thousands of years as a source for food, shelter and a place to perform ceremonies such as Corroboree, Men’s and Women’s business.
  • First Nations artwork workshops with Kasey and Jess Tattersall from Sista Studio. Students created unique and individual artwork pieces inspired and influences by their surrounding including The You Yangs, the Barwon River, the Connewarre Wetlands and the beaches of the Bellarine Peninsula

The students final major project for their Personal Development Skills subject was to create a piece of artwork at the back of the MacKillop Building and Maker Space area. This large scale mural was painted by the students with support from Jess and Kasey.

Next time your walking around the college, take a moment to enjoy this unique, creative art piece. Year 11 VCE VM students - 2026
