Nude Food: Waste Free Lunches

Whether it's your kids or your own work lunch, there are ways to avoid unnecessary packaging. The environment and your wallet will thank you.

First things first: ditch the plastic sandwich bags and wrappers and invest in reusable containers instead.

There are so many options on the market today. The popular bento boxes are perfect for keeping your lunch and snacks fresh, without the hassle of having to keep track of - and wash - multiple containers and lids. Find what works best for you.

It starts with your grocery shopping. Wherever you can, avoid packaging - especially packaging that can't be recycled. Fruit and veggies are the obvious choice here. Better yet, buy them loose and use green bags to carry them home.

Other tips for a waste-free lunch:

  • Buy in bulk and save. Avoid individually packaged snacks - and all of that unnecessary plastic wrapping.
  • Bake in bulk and freeze. Anything from pancakes and muffins to mini pizzas and zucchini slice freeze well in airtight containers. Just grab it out of the freezer in the morning and it should be defrosted come lunchtime.
  • Prepare at night. Mornings are busy, pack as much of your lunch as you can the night before.
  • Try making your own muesli bars, scrolls, biscuits and even bread rolls. It's often quicker and easier than you think.
  • Buy reusable food pouches for yoghurt and smoothies.
  • Grow your own fruit and veggies. Apples, strawberries, snow peas and carrots can be easy to grow and make ready-made snacks.
  • Don't buy water. Bring your own bottle and fill it up as you need.
  • Use a reusable cup for your coffee/tea. A lot of cafes will give you a discount if you bring your own cup.
