Dux of 2016 Award - Cooper Moody

We were delighted that Cooper Moody, Dux of 2014 could present the Dux of 2016 award and also tell us what he has been doing since leaving the College. Here is an excerpt of his speech:
“For many of you, this is one of the last experiences you will have as a student of the College. I was in this same position 3 years ago, and was accepting, rather than presenting, this award. At the time I may have partly taken school for granted or not truly appreciated all the experiences and opportunities I had. I urge you all to make the most of your time at the College, as it really is unlike anything else.
I’ve been asked tonight to tell you a little bit about my life since graduation. Having thought back on it, so much of what I learnt inside and outside the classroom at Saint Ignatius College prepared me for a successful life at university, and hopefully beyond.
Upon finishing school and starting university, I began to realise that the sense of community and friendship between the staff and students was something very unique, and quite different to life at a big city university. It has made me appreciate and look back fondly on my time here.
After experiencing the entire end of year events that you are in the middle of now, I had a much-needed break, before eventually arriving at the University of Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Biomedicine. I already had an introduction to the university through the Kwong-Lee Dow young Scholars Program. I managed to gain a residence on campus at Newman College, and the strong relationship which exists between Saint Ignatius College and Newman College meant I had a way of maintaining a sense of community, making some great friends and having extensive academic support. It has been a very intense 3 years but I have certainly enjoyed it and I am grateful to have an offer for a commonwealth-supported place in the Doctor of Medicine next year.
I have remained very close with the friends I made here at Saint Ignatius College, and I’ve always been proud to tell people where I’m from and where I went to school.
I’d like to thank my family, friends and the college community for the continuing support and I wish everyone the best for the future. “
