Dux of 2016 Award - Jessica Vella

Jessica Vella the Dux of 2016 was overseas at the time of Mosaic and provided a videotaped speech in which she spoke of her time at University this year and future plans. Mrs. Chidzey accepted her award form Cooper Moody on her behalf.
Here is an excerpt of her speech:

“Hi Saint Ignatius! Long time no see! It’s your 2016 Dux, Jess, here to update you on the year I’ve had; and boy, it’s amazing how fast things change!!

This year has been one of extreme highs and extreme lows – a proper rollercoaster. Moving away from home and the family and friends there has certainly been an interesting experience! Also, whilst studying, I’ve been working, learning completely new languages and competing with my calisthenics team! I’ve met some awesome people, made new friends, and had some great sporting successes throughout the year, but I’ve also spent less time with my family and friends. Highs and lows.

This year I went to Monash University to study a double degree in Science and Arts. However, I have just recently applied to instead study a double degree of Science and Computer Science, as of next year. After a bit of research and questioning, I have since decided that I would like to pursue a career in data science and analysis, specifically within the context of sport, so I’ve changed degrees to hopefully crack this field! I’ve set myself a lofty goal of eventually landing a job as a data analyst in a Formula One team, so it’s all guns blazing to get to that point!
Have faith in yourself and know that no matter what choice you make, it’ll all work out in the end. Thanks all! I’ll see you around!”
